Perpetuating, promoting, and teaching the craft and art of blacksmithing
The NYSDB Organization is currently set up with several regions throughout the state that meet monthly. These regions are as follows:
Adirondack
Genesee
Mohawk
Niagara
Southern Tier
Regular regional monthly meetings are open to all with curiosity. Any interested individuals may visit two regional monthly meetings free of charge.
In addition to the regional meetings the NYSDB has two statewide all-hands meetings each year. In the spring we bring in a paid demonstrator with a special talent. In recent years we have had Matthew Parkinson and Terry Sheridan. Toward the end of the year our scholarship recipients demonstrate what they learned at their respective classes and members often have a work-shop day.
The typical format of monthly meetings is as follows (This could vary by region so check with your local forge master):
The forges available for practice vary per region. Members are encouraged to bring their own hand tools. Personal safety equipment is required at meetings and includes eye, ear, and hand protection. Beginners are encouraged to work with senior members to get the most out of their experience.
It is recommended to check with the meeting host or forge master prior to the meeting. Check the website calendar for each region for specific dates. Generally, there is a $5 meeting fee and a $2 penalty if you do not bring an Iron in the hat item.
